Day 1 Game Jam Progress

"What started as an idyllic walk to the home of a cherished family member turns into a journey through hopeless despair in a war of attrition. The odds are ever mounting against her as the terrible truth of their adventure unravels, delving deeper into the darkness. But our hero must press on, hurrying towards the fanged jaws of a monstrous beast.

The true danger lies in losing Hope.

Meeting friends, collecting companions, and remembering the sweetest parts of the past our hero races against despair, fueled by the hope that she will not be too late. That she can stop the beast before it consumes her and everything she loves."

We managed to put together an amazing team of people for the 7 day Dungeon Crawler game jam event including a total of 12 people from around the world for all the roles the team knew were going to be required to build the project we envisioned. We're going to be meeting some of them later on in our daily dev logs, so keep an eye out for those in the future. We've been coming up with ideas and brainstorming and learning to work together and communicate with each other for the past three weeks. While the theme was unknown there was discussion and research, trying to take what we could from the best crawlers of the past and present, figuring out the favorite styles and ideas that team members had about different aspects of the genre as a whole. The hardest part sometimes is learning to work together so we wanted to do everything we could to come up with effective strategies for that before the event started.

Little Red Crawler is a game that we want to have the heart and soul of a crawler with a bit of charm that isn't often found in this genre of game. We're building a game about hope and how quickly it can turn to despair. Despair from fear of the unknown, fear of the forces of darkness, fear of that one last monster sneaking up behind you through the field of tall grass when you are completely out of healing items. A game where every pixel, every note, every sound, every pit into more trouble than you bargained for was hand placed with care and attention.

Day 1 progress was primarily focused on getting a game running. We covered theme discussion, character movement, map creation, basic combat, world interaction, UI wireframes, storyboarding, deciding on color palettes, and coming up with the basic mechanics to name a few things. It has been a flurry of activity and I'm very grateful to everyone working with me on the project.

Stay tuned for more updates, and I hope you have a chance to check out our fully working day 1 version of the game. Let us know what you think!
